What problems does this industry face?

Globally, the aluminum industry is facing unprecedented challenges. The demand for light metal is primarily driven by the development of various industries, including transport, energy, electronics, building & construction, all of which require increased energy efficiency. However, there are critical issues that need to be taken seriously, such as environmental concerns and climate change, population growth and urbanisation, as well as the need for innovations and breakthrough technologies.

How does this affect operations?

With the anticipated growth of aluminum demand by more than 70%-75% leading up to 2050, there is a pressing need to reduce sector emissions by around 80%. Achieving this reduction requires not only decarbonising the power sector but also implementing breakthrough technologies. Furthermore, to accurately assess the industry's impact, the complete life cycle of aluminum products must be considered, including mining, shipping, production, transportation, and downstream processes. This will provide a level playing field for all stakeholders and encourage efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
